How to Defrizz a Curly Synthetic Wig (5 Best Methods)

Here are my most recommended methods to defrizz a curly synthetic wig.

Method 1: Comb your Synthetic Curly Wig with Your Hands

Synthetic curly wigs have a tiny texture that makes them more vulnerable to hair breakage.

To disentangle the curls, you should completely avoid the usage of styling tools, such as combs and brushes.

Comb your frizzy synthetic wig with your hands. They have a gentler touch that removes knots and tangles and makes the texture of the strands shiny and smooth. Here are the steps to proceed with this method.

Step 1: Place the wig on a mannequin head to ease the process.

Step 2: Always comb the wig when it is dry, starting from the ends. Proceed to comb the ends on the part of the nape. Perform gentle movements downward, to avoid the breakage of the strands. This way, you’ll only remove tangles and knots and keep the curls tidy.

Method 2: Use Fabric Softener Sheets

This is an overall new method to defrizz a synthetic curly wig. Many wig wearers tried it and it worked. I never used it, because I fear that the ingredients of fabric softeners are too aggressive for synthetic hairs.

However, if you want to try, let’s go to the steps of the procedure.

Step 1: Wash the wig under lukewarm water. Rinse gently with cool water, tap with a towel and put the wet wig on a mannequin head.

Step 2: Put a pea-size fabric softener on a wet sheet and pass the soaked sheet along the ends of the wig hair. Perform the process from the back, on single strands and with gentle movements downwards.

If you treat the curls all at once, in fact, you’ll obtain the opposite result, namely more tangled curls.

Step 3: Let the wig dry naturally in a fresh and dry room and, meanwhile, always comb the curls with your hands.

Step 4: When the synthetic wig dries, keep combing the synthetic curls with soft movements. This way, your unity should return as stunning as when you purchased it.

The method of fabric softener is, unfortunately, suitable for not severe frizziness or minimal flyaway hairs.

If your synthetic curly wig is in more extreme conditions, go to the following method.

Method 3: Use De-frizz Shampoo and Conditioner for Synthetic Wigs

There are many types of shampoos and conditioners for synthetic wigs around you.

Some of them are dry products, such as dry shampoo and leave-in conditioner, but, depending on the type of synthetic wig you have, these products could make the synthetic hair duller and more tangled.

For this reason, I suggest that you use de-frizz shampoos and conditioners for synthetic wig washing.

Always choose products rich in oils and organic ingredients and avoid the ones containing propylene glycol. The latter is a cosmetic humectant that absorbs too much water, making synthetic hairs drier and frizzier, over time.

Use de-frizz shampoo and conditioner while you are washing your wig.

Step 1: Immerse your synthetic curly wig into lukewarm water. Add a pea size of de-frizz shampoo and tap gently on the wig. Rinse until the water gets clear.

Step 2: Add a small amount of de-frizz conditioner on the ends. Let it rest on the wig for five minutes, at least. Then, rinse softly until the water gets clear.

Step 3: Put the wet wig on a mannequin head, and wrap it on a soft fabric towel. Dry always gently with soft taps around the head.

Step 4: Let the wig dry naturally.

Step 5: Comb the ends with your hands.

With this method, your synthetic curly wig should become awesome!

Method 4: Use Oils to Smooth the Curls of your Synthetic Wig

Usually, it is believed that oils have moisturizing and nourishing effects on human hair only. In reality, they work on synthetic curly wigs, as well.

Their positive effect depends on the tiny texture of synthetic curls; these artificial hairs are, in fact, prone to adsorb oils and appear immediately shinier and smooth.

Apply oils with high moisturizing properties, such as argan, olive, and sweet almond. Avoid linseed oil, because the latter contains excess water, which dries the synthetic hairs once it has evaporated, making them more tangled.

Step 1: Apply the oil only when the wig is dry. Perform the application on a wig stand.

Step 2: Put a few drops of oil on the ends only, starting from the nape. If the hairs along the frontal hairline are frizzy, you can apply the oil on them, also.

Step 3: Comb gently the oiled strands with your hands. If the frizziness of your synthetic curly wig is obstinate and hard to tame, try with heat tools.

Method 5: Use Curling Iron to Tame the Curls of your Synthetic Wig

With a curly synthetic wig, you mustn’t use a hair drier or a portable fabric heater, but only a curling iron.

That is a styling tool specifically designed for curly hairs. Be careful to use the one with adjustable temperature.

It’s really simple! After the synthetic wig is dried naturally on the mannequin head, set a medium temperature and wrap the single curl on the end of the iron. Perform a circular movement downward, to style the curl. Repeat the process with the other curls.

This way, your curly synthetic wig will be shiny, and with a fashionable style looking like the one did by your hairdresser.
